From One Daughter To Another

When Mum needed permanent residential aged care, I sat in a facility tour meeting and heard words like RAD, DAP, accommodation payment and means tested care fee thrown around like I should already know what they meant.

I didn't. I remember walking out to the car park thinking, I still have absolutely no idea what any of that means.

So I did what most of us do. I went home and googled. I found government pages full of legal jargon, financial sites trying to sell me something and forums full of people just as lost as me.

Nobody just sat me down and said, here's what you're actually paying for in plain English.

So I built the guide I wish someone had handed me. Not a legal document. Not a financial lecture. Just a straight, honest explanation of what a RAD is, what a DAP is, why Centrelink gets involved and the questions I wish I'd asked before signing anything.

So you never feel as lost in that meeting as I did.

Warmly,

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a RAD and a DAP?

A RAD is one larger payment, mostly refundable, think of it like buying the room. A DAP is smaller daily payments, not refundable, think of it like renting. Both pay for the same room, just in different ways. The guide walks through real examples so you can see how each one plays out.

Do I have to pay the full RAD amount upfront?

Not necessarily. Many families choose a combination of both a RAD and a DAP. What suits your family depends on your circumstances, which is exactly why we recommend speaking with an aged care financial advisor before deciding. The guide explains how a combination payment works.

What is the MPIR and why does it matter?

It's the government interest rate used to calculate your daily accommodation payment. It sounds scary, it isn't. The guide breaks down exactly how it's calculated with a simple worked example.

Is this guide going to tell me exactly what my parent will pay?

No and here's why. Every family's situation is different, and only Services Australia (Centrelink) or an Aged Care Financial Advisor can give you figures specific to your parent's circumstances. What this guide does is help you understand the language and the process, so those conversations make sense.

Do I need a financial advisor to work this out?

We highly recommend speaking with an Aged Care Financial Advisor and Services Australia before making any financial decisions. This guide isn't a substitute for that, it's here to help you walk into those meetings already understanding the basics.

Is this free guide really free or is there a catch?

Completely free. No catch. Just my way of making sure no one else has to sit through that meeting feeling as lost and confused as I did.

I know this stage comes with a hundred questions, most of them starting with "wait, what does that even mean?"

Here are a few I get asked most.
