No medical jargon • Just practical, heartfelt advice

I remember the exact moment it hit me. The sudden, sinking realisation that my mum... the woman who had spent her entire life caring for me, was no longer able to manage everything on her own. It wasn't a dramatic crisis at first, just a series of small, quiet signs that told me things were changing faster than we were prepared for.
When I started trying to figure out the aged care system I felt completely lost. I spent countless nights googling my aged care, drowning in confusing paperwork, finding contradictory advice and oh my gosh... and long waitlists. I was exhausted, overwhelmed and constantly worried that I was making the wrong choices for my mum.
So I built these tools and resources because I never want another daughter or son to feel as alone and helpless as I did. This isn't medical or legal advice: it's the clear, compassionate roadmap that I wish someone had handed to me when I was standing right where you are now.
Warmly,
XBec - My Aging Parents Support Advocate

You can start by calling the My Aged Care phone line. Your guide will walk you through what to say, what to expect and what happens next, step by step.
Eligibility is mostly based on your parent’s age, day‑to‑day needs and how they manage at home. They are also financially means tested for their contribution payment towards their care. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to reach out and ask for an assessment.
Have your parent’s Medicare details, GP information and a short description of their daily challenges ready. They will ask questions to gather an honest picture of what is happening.
Some services are fully funded, some are subsidised and some have fees based on assets and income (means tested). My Aged Care & Centrelink (Services Australia) will explain the costs.
Timeframes can vary. Often there is a long waiting period between the first call, the assessment and services starting. The guide helps you know what to expect and what you can follow up on along the way.
Support is not just for your parent. There are services for carers and family members too, including respite care, information and emotional support via carers gateway so you do not feel like you have to hold everything on your own.
If there is an immediate risk to your parent’s safety or health, call emergency services first. For urgent but non‑emergency concerns, contact your parent's GP/Doctor and My Aged Care.
If you are feeling unsure or overwhelmed, you are not alone. These are the same questions daughters and sons ask every day when they first start the process with My Aged Care.
I finally felt like I had a map for this overwhelming process. The Quick Start Guide gave me understanding and confidence when I needed it most. It truly helped everything for us
